The Vacancy

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced small animal veterinary surgeon to join our independent mixed practice with branches in Ellon and Methlick. This is a part-time post with flexible hours.

Our practice is family orientated and we can offer flexible working to suit your needs. We offer a comprehensive range of services in a friendly and supportive environment. Our modern and well equipped surgery allows us to provide the highest standard of care to our patients and their owners. We are a RCVS accredited practice and our team of vets are supported by experienced RVNs, VCAs and ACAs.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a team but can also work independently, or can progress to working independently. This role does not involve any out of hours work - this is covered by our own team of mixed vets. A generous salary is commensurate with experience.

At Glenythan Vet Group we are passionate about supporting the next generation of vets. Three of our vets have completed the VetGDP certification. We also offer an exciting opportunity for a paid mixed vet EMS apprenticeship.

We’re open to offering affordable partnership opportunities once we know the successful candidate is a good fit for our team. Relocation expenses can be provided.

For more information please contact Jill Shand on 01358 720223 / 01651 806212 or Jill or Sarah on info@glenythanvetgroup.com

If you would like to know more about us before applying, you would be very welcome to come and meet the team and hear what they have to say about Glenythan. Lunchbreaks and tea breaks are important to us so you’ll have time to chat when you visit!

“This is a lovely practice, speaking as a client. It reminds me of practices when I trained 20 years ago (not in terms of clinical standards) when practices were all independent was a much more relaxed and often had staff dogs behind reception, et cetera. Established team and has a family feel to it. Affordable vet care too .... so I suspect the client base is pretty happy. If anyone’s wanting to relocate, this is a really lovely area and one of the most affordable places in the UK!”

Getting The Balance Right

We are totally family oriented and have several employees working hours to suit their childcare or other personal needs.

Ceilidhs, pub outings and the unmissable Methlick Farmers Ball feature in the Glenythan social calendar.

After an appropriate qualifying time, we would be very supportive of sabbatical leave. We try to run slightly over-staffed so we can accommodate events like this and minimise the potential impact on colleagues.

Sometimes it’s the small touches that say the most: at the start of every school term, one of our receptionists, unprompted, prints out the school calendar and ensures the practice managers have it easily to hand. On first sight, it might seem insignificant but it highlights the care, thoughtfulness, culture and teamwork within Glenythan.

Support

Clinical Back-Up and Support

Back-up is always in place for new or recent graduates for as long as they need it. This has typically been for one to three years but we don’t apply limits.

Our wildlife work is extremely interesting and we’re lucky that we are working with very experienced staff at the New Arc Wildlife Rescue centre but full support from the Glenythan team is always made available too. We’re the kind of practice where we frequently chat amongst the team about what we are doing and seeing and about our treatment plans.

No matter how experienced a person appears to be, we recognise that everyone needs a hand at some point.  A notable recent example is one of our very experienced vets helping a 22-year qualified vet with ultrasound scanning and they video-called another vet to get a third opinion. Everyone is always happy to help/offer support!

If we have to consider referring a patient, Cùmath Pet Surgeons is less than 2 miles from our Ellon branch. We also have an ophthalmology referral centre nearby. Clients are also willing to travel to access more distant referral centres.

Helping Your Professional Development

We strongly support an individual’s professional development. Study towards a certificate would be encouraged. We also provide in-house training covering topics such as ultrasound scanning.

Community Engagement

Contributing To Our Local And Professional Communities

We love hosting EMS students and school pupils. Scotland’s newest vet school, based in Aberdeen and with a footprint across rural Scotland, opened last year. We‘ve been in contact with them and we're keen to develop our links with them. Members of our team have also provided some practical courses to the veterinary technician and agriculture students at SRUC.

We would welcome participation with, and the development of, further community engagement if it was of interest to the successful candidate.

An opportunity to work with wildlife

We’re the vets for The New Arc (the North East Wildlife & Animal Rescue Centre) in Ellon. The charity takes in a large number of orphaned or injured wildlife every year from all over the North East of Scotland – from polecats to owls to deer and eagles!

We’ve also recently become involved with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue - having already dealt with a beached porpoise, seals and beached dolphins.

Team Feedback

What Our Team Say About Us

Kaitlyn has moved on but here's what she says about working as a veterinary surgeon at Glenythan:

"Glenythan Vet Group has been the best first job. It’s a true representative of mixed practice where you tend to see most species in a day. There’s a large variety in the work from pedigree beef and sheep herds to first opinion and emergency small animal work, with some ponies thrown in for good measure. It’s a very scenic part of the world to work in and the people of Aberdeenshire are very welcoming. The team at Glenythan will quickly become your family and there is always a cup of tea and a home bake waiting for you. To say it’s a supportive work place is an understatement and there’s always a spare person to lend a hand. We are going to miss many a night in the pub in Methlick celebrating every milestone but we will certainly be back for the Farmers Ball ...."
